Tooth Extractions
At Phoenix Road Dental Surgery, smiles are our mission. That’s why our main goal is to save your original teeth for as long as possible,
Unfortunately, there may come a time when tooth extraction is the only option available.
While you can rest assured that we’ll do everything we can do to prevent this from happening – if it does you’ll also be in excellent hands.
Our Spearwood-based staff all have extensive experience in this area and take pride in providing the highest possible level of care in Perth when performing teeth extractions.
Some of the common causes of tooth extraction in Perth include teeth that have become unrestorable through tooth decay, periodontal disease (a.k.a gum disease) and dental trauma.
The other primary reason for tooth extraction is the occurrence of problems relating to wisdom teeth.
When it comes to wisdom teeth extraction in Spearwood, at Phoenix Road Dental Surgery we recommend having them removed as soon as possible – ideally even before you start to notice any pain or discomfort
This is especially true if your wisdom teeth are impacted.
Some of the common problems caused by impacted wisdom teeth are:
- Infection
- Crowding
- Pain
- Cyst
- Ulcers
- Food trap
- Decay/problems with the adjacent tooth
If you have wisdom teeth that are in danger of becoming impacted (or you’re worried that you do and want to know for sure), just book a check-up appointment today.
All extractions in our Spearwood dental practice are performed with local anesthetics to ensure minimal pain and discomfort during treatment. If desired the treatment can be done under nitrous oxide or IV sedation.
As wisdom teeth extractions involve a longer procedure, we recommend having the extraction done under IV sedation so you will not feel or remember anything.
Most importantly, we understand that tooth extraction is a serious procedure and can be a taxing experience. That’s why we go out of our way to provide the most compassionate and understanding dental care available in Perth.

Frequently Asked Questions
Tooth extractions should not be painful during the procedure because the area is completely numbed with local anaesthetic. Afterwards, it’s normal to feel tenderness for a few days, especially if it was a difficult extraction. The dentist will prescribe you pain relief if required. If you’re anxious, we do provide options for safe Nitrous oxide administration or IV sedation options.
Initial healing of the gum usually takes about 1 to 2 weeks. Most people feel noticeably better in 2 to 3 days, but deeper healing (especially after surgical or wisdom tooth removal) can take several weeks. Following aftercare instructions helps reduce complications and speeds up recovery.
Pain is usually manageable with simple steps:
– Take pain relief as advised (or prescribed)
– Use a cold pack on the cheek for the first 24 hours (10 minutes on/off)
– Rest and keep your head slightly elevated
– After 24 hours, rinse gently with warm salt water (don’t swish hard)
Avoid smoking, straws, spitting, or vigorous rinsing early on, as these can trigger dry socket and worsen pain.
For a straightforward extraction, many people can start introducing softer “solid” foods after 24 to 48 hours, as comfort allows. If it was a surgical extraction or wisdom tooth removal, you may need longer before chewing normally. Start soft, chew on the opposite side, and increase texture gradually.
Stick to soft, easy foods for the first couple of days, such as:
– Yoghurt, custard, smoothies (no straw), soft fruits
– Mashed potato, scrambled eggs, pasta, porridge
– Soups (let them cool – avoid very hot foods early on)
Avoid crunchy, hard, spicy foods, small seeds (like popcorn), and alcohol until healing is underway.
