It wasn't too long ago that an aching, infected or deeply decayed tooth required extraction. These days with modern techniques and equipment, teeth can often be saved by a procedure called root canal treatment. Most people prefer to save their tooth because it generally will function better than an artificial tooth.
Root canal treatment involves removal of the infected nerve, re-shaping of the nerve chamber and then fill and seal the tooth. After root canal treatment a crown is normally placed to strengthen the remaining tooth.
The tooth will be fully anaesthetized (numbed) during the root canal treatment, but if you are nervous then the procedure can be done under nitrous oxide or IV sedation. Discuss with our friendly dentist the different options.
